The Eye Of Horus

I was recently asked a question in regards to my knowledge of the Eye of Horus. Here is my response:

The Eye of Horus in mythology represents power, protection in general and protection from evil, healing, and the acting out of these aspects. The left eye of Horus is masculine, while the right eye of Horus is feminine (although the opposite is also said to be true).

The left eye is associated with the sun; the right eye is associated with the moon. The left eye is white; the right eye black. Horus’ left eye was destroyed by his brother Set and restored by Thoth. At one point, Horus offered his eye to Osiris in the netherworld to help him rule it, thus restoring Osiris to life. It then became the symbol for life and resurrection or “to be made whole”. Egyptians used the Eye of Horus symbol to form their mathematical fraction system and tied the symbolism to the senses based on the concept that different senses required different amount of energy to detect and process. The ancient Egyptians used the system as we used fractions and based their symbols for fractions on different parts of the symbol of the Eye of Horus. The system was represented as follows:

  • 1/2 Smell
  • 1/4 Light or Sight
  • 1/8 Thought
  • 1/16 Hearing
  • 1/32 Taste
  • 1/64 Touch

In later thought, Horus is linked with the eye of time (Hours) and is also part of the ancient mystery school teachings – sometimes referred to as the Right Eye of Horus Mystery Schools which hold the truth about reality. These teachings were provided by Isis and Osiris – left behind with their priests in Egypt to be passed down through the millennia until the time was right for consciousness to awaken. Many believe these are the same souls who were the priests in Atlantis. The Eye of Horus and the Eye of Ra or God are one and the same.

In masonic and other traditions, the Eye of Horus became the “all seeing eye” and was always shown in a pyramid. It represents the combining of seeing from one eye the light, from the other the dark, which leads us to understand duality. In this way we achieve the “knowing” of transcended enlightment. To fully see everything, including the truths behind all stages of consciousness, is to become fully conscious and thus all knowing.

My personal experience with the Eye of Horus is as the ”all seeing eye”. It is being able to find the truth behind all energy and understand the meaning of it. It is being able to see beyond what a person is saying, to see beyond what you feel, to understand more than all the individual senses combined tell you and know the truth from the perspective of enlightenment. It also means that nothing is hidden from you.
